How to Make DIY Rocking Chair
At first, you need to make the chair rockers. For this, you need to get the wooden planks of the same length and then you need to join them using wood glue. Get 6 strips of wood that should be about 80cm long, 0.8cm tall and 3.0cm wide.
When you apply the wood glue, place the wood strips on the jig and apply some pressure using the sacrificial strip and clamps. You need to make the two rockers using this technique.
Now you need to create the Mortises on both the rockers on both ends so that you can join the tenons of the chair’s legs. It is good to make the mortises at a distance of 5cm from both sides.
Create 4 legs of about 80cm long and 7cm wide. Create the tenons and then join the legs with the rockers. Don’t forget to use the wood glue here as well.
If you are going to make a baby rocking chair then you can reduce the length of the wood for a smalle size chair.
Now, you have to create a support for the seat. You can again use the mortises and tenons technique. Just mark the place where you want to fit the seat and create the support with the same type of wood that you used for making the chair legs.
Now, make the back slats by using the 80×60 cm frame. Make sure to use the round slats which you can make by using the router and a round-over bit. Attach this frame by using the support of the leg and the seat support.
After you have fixed the back frame, now it is time to make and fix the seat. A 30mm thick wooden countertop would be a great choice for the seat. Take the measurements from the supports you had already fixed and then cust the seat according to that measurement. You can use the nails and glue to fix the seat.
Without the arms, a chair can never be completed. You can make the round-shaped arms but I personally like the straight arms. Make sure to round the edges using the router so that it feels comfortable.
That is it. Your DIY rocking chair is ready. Now you can use it as it is or you can use some paint to make it more stylish according to your requirements.
